Thread Painting Demo

This is the actual picture I'm going to paint.

Planning thread selection using a variety of Sulky threads.

The image is traced onto Sulky Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer™ (Sulky web site) using a fine tipped pen. Before tracing I carefully taped the stabilizer and the drawing to a stable surface to help keep them aligned. At this point I also cut a piece of Sulky Tear-Easy™ Stabilizer the approximate size of the drawing.

I placed the Solvy tracing on the fabric to make sure it was centered and straight, made some alignment marks on the fabric and then sprayed the back side of the Solvy with temporary adhesive. Then I aligned the Solvy on the fabric according to the markings and gently smoothed it out over the fabric. I let it dry for a few moments and then hooped the fabric and Solvy.

Given the Solvy's delicate hand, you may be tempted to treat it gingerly. I've never had a problem with it stretching, i.e., to the point that it distorts the image, and thus it is hardier than its feel might lead you to believe.

Preparation: I always start with a new needle and prepare a few extra bobbins.

You can't see it here, but at the machine I placed Sulky Tear-Easy™ Stabilizer under the hooped fabric to provide backing and stability to the thread painting. It is not caught in the hoop, but gets picked up and attached to the project as I sew.

Doing some outlining to help me stay "within the lines" as I color.
