Quilter's Wizards

A lot of quilters, like me, hate the math. And there can be a lot of math in quilting. What to do? Well, I can't do the calcuations in my head, but I can look things up quickly and easily using these gadgets!

I created these lookup tools because I needed them myself!

Quilter's Straight Binding Calculator
Ever try to finish a UFO without the pattern handy? How much fabric will it take to bind it, now that it's *this close* to being finished? Or what if you added an extra border? Now how much binding fabric do you need?

The Quilter's Straight Binding Calculator takes the hassle out of determining how much fabric will be needed to bind your quilt. We did the math and made it easy to use. The calculator addresses cut strip width from 2-4 inches, and quilt perimeters from 60 to 474 inches.

The Straight Binding Calculator can be used two ways:

  • Look up the perimeter measurement of your quilt, and it will display how much fabric you need for the binding width of your choice.
  • Look up the amount of fabric you have on hand, and it shows you how far that fabric will go at various cut widths.
  • Great for borders too!

Quilter's Bias Binding Wizard
Seeing is believing! The Quilter’s Bias Binding Wizard calculates fabric yardage for that "square tube". It assumes 40” usable fabric width and 1/4” seams. Odd yardage results have been rounded up to the next 1/8 yard.

The mathematical assumptions are clearly described on each wizard. All you have to do is look up the length of the binding and the cut strip width you plan to use. The fabric requirements are displayed in the small window.

Quilter's Backing Wizard

If you are backing your quilt with vertical orientation of the fabric, the calculation is easy: If the width is less than 40", the length equals yardage. If the width is less than 80", then 2x length, etc. It is important that no seams fall where the finished quilt will be folded, to ensure that no stress points fall on the fold line. You'd hate to put all the work in to the quilt top and quilting and have it pull apart at the backing seams!

There are situations where aligning the backing fabric horizontally makes better use of fabric, and makes a better quilt. The Quilter's Backing Wizard is a great look-up tool to tell you how much backing fabric you will need if aligning the backing fabric horizontally.

The mathematical assumptions are clearly described on each wizard. All you have to do is measure the length and width of your quilt top.
